CA is pleased to share with members that the government has finally made a move to advance a cosmetics animal testing ban in Canada. CA and our allied stakeholder group (including animal protection advocates and their retail partners) have been working closely for many years to build a consensus and advance legislation.
In Budget 2023, announced yesterday, the government proposes to amend the Food and Drugs Act to ban cosmetic testing on animals. “The proposed amendments would prohibit: testing cosmetics on animals in Canada; selling cosmetics that rely on animal testing data to establish the product’s safety, with some exceptions; and false or misleading labelling pertaining to the testing of cosmetics on animals.”
CA and our allied stakeholder group issued the attached statement yesterday in support of this development.
We are now awaiting the wording of the proposed legislation to ensure it is aligned with the E.U. ban and workable within the Canadian regulatory context (including the Self Care Framework). We also continue to stress with government the need to table the legislation in advance of Canada hosting the 12th World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences in Niagara Falls this coming August.
CA will continue to keep members informed of developments.
