CA continues to pursue clarity on the issues arising from Quebec Bill 96 and its amendments to the Charter of the French Language concerning the communication of the information provided on trademarks. As has been previously reported in the newsletter, CA is currently working with member companies and other trade associations to engage the Quebec government to develop a guidance document to provide certainly on the many questions that are arising.
In addition to coordinating with FHCP and other associations, CA President was in Montreal last week to meet with Jason Moscovici of CA associate member ROBIC (law firm), as well as Christian Bolduc of Smart & Biggar who represent the International Trademark Association. Both Jason and Christian were able to provide a detailed understanding of the issues that will need to be addressed in developing a useful guidance document by the Quebec government, as well as the strategy to achieve this goal.
As a CA associate member, Jason and the ROBIC law firm will be providing CA members with a webinar on this matter in the New Year. We will also be working with the International Trademark Association on coordinating the general industry strategy moving forward, including utilizing the specific offer by Quebec to work with CA on the development of a guidance document.
As discussed in our recent Regulatory Workshop, we will be looking to CA members to provide us with examples of products/trademarks for which clarity will be needed as well as issues that may arise that will have to be discussed with the Quebec government. We hope that this work will support our collective efforts to advance proposed solutions that will be acceptable to Quebec and will form the basis of a guidance document to provide clarity.
CA will be reaching out to our members early in the New Year with further information on this important issue.
